Old Things

Last Friday, I bought an old brooch at an antique market near Heidelberg.

This is a very tiny brooch. The Size is 20mm*10mm (compare with my fingers!). If you see it closely, you will find it consisting of very small pieces of glass. This type of technique is called micro mosaic.

Micro mosaic was at its peak in the mid 19th century Italy. One of the most popular motive of micro mosaic was Italian landscapes and landmarks.

Young aristocrats in that time favored traveling in France and Italy to enlarge their experiences. They must have brought their memories with micro mosaic accessories.

Unfortunately, my brooch is not in a fine condition, nor is it a masterpiece. But I was fascinated by its small world. I imagined who and how made this brooch, and who was the first man/woman to buy this. Although I had not known about micro mosaic at all, it appeared as something charm with my mind.

This is my first old accessory that I bought myself. It brings to me a micro mosaic history. I enjoyed to research and read about it.
Old things must have many stories. I want to know more. Now I'm planning to go to other antique market in the near future.
